Lassen Volcanic NP and the 2012 Solar Eclipse

An annular solar eclipse crossed over a swath of the western US on May 20, 2012. Lassen was right in the middle of the path, and I had always wanted to visit there anyway. The combination made for a good trip.

At first the photos were not working at all. I had no special filters or equipment. Then I found that by using a setting of infinite focus, and zooming in, combined with holding the eclipse eye protectors in front of the lens, it basically worked.

It started at 5:15 and reached annularity at 6:30. I then tried another setting - beach - with bright sunlight. This is exactly what it looked like through the eye protectors.

Plenty of other people were watching at the Devastated Area.

I did some hikes before and after. Crag Lake (in the lower left).
