In September, we returned to the Palisades to try and climb North Palisade. Unlike most Sierra peaks where the climbing is mostly on rock, the easiest route on North Palisade goes up a relatively steep snow gully called the U Notch. It's not that steep for experienced ice and snow climbers, but that wasn't our expertise. Normally you would kick your steps in to climb the gully. But there was a cold snap, and snow was rock hard. We had crampons, and could not penetrate the ice more than an eighth of an inch. So our attempt failed, and since it was late in the season and I moved to Colorado the next year, I never climbed North Palisade peak.
